Narrow the field
A player will raise or bet in order to scare off other players whose hands could be worse than that player, but where their hands could improve eventually.
Near nuts
Nearest to the best hand possible. Few cards or unlikely hands could beat this hand.
Net winnings
All winnings deducted from an original wager.
Nickel
This is a $5 chip. Also slang for $500.
Nit
To buy time, waiting patiently for a playable hand.
NL
A No Limit abbreviation.
No limit
A game where there are no maximum bets. Often, players can bet as much as they want at any time and also declare themselves “all in”.
Nursing
When a player plays very carefully because they have less money or are losing.
Nut
What a player decides to win before quitting.
Nut flush
The very best flush available
